Fellowships as Funding: Elevating Opportunities in International Education

The overlap between education abroad and fellowships is large, with shared advising practices and strategic opportunities for student engagement and professional development. Fellowships like Boren, Gilman, Fulbright, and CLS represent an important piece of the financial puzzle for study abroad, however knowledge and utilization of these programs is uneven across institutions. We aim to contextualize these opportunities and explain their importance as they relate to education abroad.

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion, participants will be able to understand what competitive student fellowships and scholarships are, including how they serve as a funding model for education abroad. This includes becoming familiar with basic criteria of common scholarships for international education - such as the Gilman Scholarship, Fund for Education Abroad, Freeman-ASIA, Boren Awards, Critical Language Scholarship Program, and Fulbright U.S. Student Program, etc. - and recognizing the additional developmental benefits of these programs for students and buildability toward further opportunities.
  • Upon completion, participants will be able to develop an awareness of the overlap between fellowships and study abroad work and leverage that knowledge to benefit the students they serve. This includes establishing a foundation for effective cooperation with fellowships advisors and understanding implications for institutional prestige and standing.
  • Upon completion, participants will feel empowered to raise awareness about fellowship opportunities to a broader and more diverse set of potential applicants in their student bodies. This includes understanding where resources for fellowships currently exist in their institution, and who their allies might be - such as Honors colleges, offices for research, and specific academic departments - and being able to share tools and next steps with students to pursue fellowship opportunities.
