This session explores UNESCO Story Circles as a tool for fostering empathy and understanding in Canada's higher education. Story Circles involve structured storytelling where participants share experiences and engage in active listening, promoting intercultural dialogue. Participants will gain strategies for enhancing communication and bridging divides. Through case studies and activities, attendees will learn to apply this methodology to support inclusive and sustainable learning environments.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will explore how UNESCO Story Circles can serve as a practical tool for bridging cultural divides and enhancing empathy. They will gain a deeper understanding of how storytelling can promote intercultural dialogue both in the classroom and in global mobility programming.
Through a hands-on breakout activity, attendees will experience Story Circles firsthand by sharing personal stories related to cultural identity, allowing them to witness the methodology’s effectiveness in real-time. Case studies will be used to illustrate the successful implementation of Story Circles in various higher education settings, providing concrete examples of best practices.
Participants will acquire practical strategies and low-barrier, inexpensive tools for infusing greater empathy and understanding into campus-wide intercultural dialogue on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, the Sustainable Development Goals, and Reconciliation.
Interactive elements, including breakout activities and facilitated discussions, will encourage active participation and provide opportunities for attendees to apply concepts immediately.
Facilitated discussions will help participants reflect on their own experiences, share insights, and develop actionable strategies for enhancing intercultural communication in their professional contexts.
