AIEA to WUN: Making Strategic Choices in the Alphabet Soup of Conferences

As international education evolves, institutions and professionals must strategically approach conference participation. This session explores how to align conference choices with institutional goals and personal career development while considering resources, climate action, and JEDIAR principles. We’ll discuss identifying suitable events, making strategic decisions, maximizing participation, and exploring funding opportunities for professional development.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will have a better understanding of the international education conference landscape as well as the ability to strategically consider which conferences to participate in, how they will participate, who should participate, and for what purposes.
  • Participants will receive tips about writing conference session proposals considering different conference audiences internationally, and how to strategically connect to international partners to invite participation on a panel, session, or workshop.
  • Participants will leave with a better understanding of the intersections of climate action, JEDI and IE; and will better understand how they can make positive impacts with emissions reduction in their work while increasing access to international education opportunities for themselves, their teams and the students they serve. Attendees will receive links to resources and tools to support them in their climate journey.
  • Participants will learn how to budget for and approach supervisors for conference attendance approvals, including discussion on external factors that can be taken into consideration when drafting budgets and researching and applying for funding.
