As there are renewed calls to create more opportunities for programs and partnerships that encourage U.S. students to study abroad in Sub-Saharan Africa, international educators are at a critical moment to make sure that we are not using these opportunities to reinforce colonial narratives and experiences of study abroad in Sub-Saharan Africa. Rather than replicating the past, international educators should be creating new models of study abroad programming that are based more on reciprocity.

Define and understand Fair Trade Learning (FTL).
Demonstrate an expanded understanding of partnerships that prioritize reciprocity and shared values.
Utilize a toolkit of methods and resources to assess and/or build education abroad opportunities in Sub-Saharan Africa that are mutually beneficial.
Break down myths and misperceptions of study abroad in Sub-Saharan Africa.
