Promoting Safer Learning Environments through Trauma-Informed Practices

Recently, the concept of trauma has gained much attention, facilitating dialog on deep psychological wounds. This increased awareness has revealed the deeply personal nature of trauma. Trauma-informed practice in Higher Ed aims to understand these experiences while focusing on the student–staff/educator relationship & creating safe, inclusive environments. This session helps educators & staff develop strategies to foster a secure learning atmosphere, ensuring students feel supported & protected

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion, participants will be able to define what trauma informed practice is and how trauma can come about.
  • Upon completion, participants will be able to demonstrate a deeper awareness of how trauma can play out in a student’s experience within education abroad.
  • Upon completion, participants will be able to use some practical tools in applying trauma informed practice within education abroad programs.
  • Upon completion, participants will be able to embed trauma informed practices into the strategic planning and execution of education abroad programs.
