Innovative Strategies to Reduce Staff Burnout and Improve Retention

Education abroad has faced enormous challenges in hiring and retaining staff since the pandemic. Chronic understaffing, salaries that are not competitive, and changing expectations about work are impacting our organizations. With a range of examples from their own offices, these panelists will inspire leaders to consider innovative approaches to hiring and engaging talented staff, mitigating burnout, and providing space and resources for growth and development.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will gain an understanding of the current challenges of staff engagement and retention. The session will provide an overview of these challenges in higher education and in our field specifically. This knowledge will serve as a starting point for those seeking to better understand the context of hiring and retention in the field of Education Abroad.
  • Participants will learn about different methods for addressing staffing challenges. The session will provide examples of solutions that the presenters have utilized, and the quantitative and qualitative impact they have had. Attendees will be prompted to think “outside the box” and consider other novel approaches that may work to address the concerns at their institution or organization.
  • Participants will apply their learning to one current challenge they face and come away with possible action steps towards a solution.
