Indigenous Global Learning Using an Equity and Justice-oriented Lens

Location: Willow Centre and West, Mezzanine level
The session introduces the Global Justice and Change Program (GJC) at Toronto Metropolitan University, funded by the Government of Canada's Outbound Student Mobility Pilot Program. The program focused on global learning for Indigenous students, exploring Haudenosaunee
culture and wisdom in Aotearoa (New Zealand) through a justice-oriented lens. Faculty and administrators will share their perspectives, lessons, and best practices.

Learning Objectives:

  • Adopt critical pedagogical approaches that promote Indigenous ways of knowing.
  • Partner with Indigenous students, educators and communities in curriculum development.
  • Examine their own biases and positionality by: (1) unpacking assumptions about "success" in global education, (2) reflecting on power dynamics in international partnerships, and (3) identifying ways to disrupt colonial mindsets in program design.
  • Develop a more nuanced, equity-oriented approach to Indigenous global learning that challenges colonial mindsets and promotes justice for Indigenous peoples.
