Navigating Indigenizing International Education as Non-indigenous People

Decolonization and indigenization of education abroad requires passionate allies across organizations and institutions to advocate for this work. But it is not always clear how to advance this work as non-Indigenous faculty, staff, or practitioners. This engaging and action-oriented session will explore critical context for decolonization work and share case studies to help you understand how you can use your passion to support or lead institutional efforts, with humility and authenticity.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the opportunities and impact of decolonization and indigenization of education abroad.
  • Relate their own work to case studies and examples of non-Indigenous practitioners, and be inspired to explore pathways to support and build on existing work or identify opportunities to indigenize.
  • Develop language for inviting colleagues from across an institution into the work or asking for guidance with humility and openness, being mindful of historical context and burden by exchanging ideas with colleagues and panellists.
  • Understand what resources are available within institutions and networks, and takeaway practical tips for next steps from shared presenter resources.
