Individual, Holistic Study Abroad Advising from Applicant to Alumni

From helping students to apply to welcoming them back home, this session provides a small education abroad office perspective on how to personalize the study abroad advising experience. Presenters will share their diverse experiences in study abroad advising and the ways they have individualized their services in the application, pre-departure, and returnee stages. Participants will engage in activities to reflect on how they can adopt these ideas into their own practice.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will learn individualized study abroad advising strategies to make the student experience more personal from application to return home.
  • Participants will identify ways to leverage study abroad alumni and international students to promote education abroad.
  • Participants will find opportunities to collaborate with internal and external partners to encourage institutional internationalization.
  • Participants will understand how individualized advising can encourage the mobility of underrepresented students in study abroad.
