If Only We Had Known: Shared Pre-departure Student Mental Health Strategies

How can EA professionals develop a consistent and effective approach to collecting, reviewing, and using appropriate student health and mental health information, with the goal of supporting students with mental health challenges before they go abroad? How can EA offices collaborate with other campus resources to help identify students at risk, assist with the creation of an appropriate self-care plan, and, if necessary, convince a student to choose a different program or postpone their plans?

Learning Objectives:

  • Create a more consistent and effective approach to collecting and reviewing student mental health information and supporting students with mental health challenges before they go abroad.
  • Develop strategies for collaborating with other campus/organizational resources to help identify students at risk, assist students with the development of an appropriate self-care plan, and, if necessary, help convince a student to choose a different program or postpone their study abroad plans.
  • Gain a deeper understanding of best practices utilized by universities and organizations to effectively screen and support study abroad applicants with significant mental health challenges and support needs.
  • Improve their ability to help minimize the likelihood that a student with significant mental health challenges will have a negative and perhaps dangerous experience while abroad.
